I have lost nearly 7 lbs. in as many days.
Y'know those pushy salespeope? While perusing used CDs at the malls music shop, (FYE, perhaps. It's the one with the music.) trying to find something cheap and groovy I hadn't heard before, "Donny" tries to sell me all his favorite albums; which are mostly terrible. The good news is that while trying to explain how I want something that can be danced to in a manner involving more than having a seizure of the posterior, he informed me of a competition happening at the end of the month, location TBA.
I called some friends for details, and I find that the prize is a solid $1000.
If this is the same competition run by the same people as last year, I don't think I'll enter. Last year the guy who won was the brother of the sponsor, and while that doesn't in itself mean anything, the fact that HE FELL during his routine - a routine that was not very great - should be an indicator of the contest's integrity. I still came in 4th.
However, if this is something new, and it's open to all styles of dance, I'm in. I know at least one breakdancer who's participating, but Jonathan's going to Europe, else I'd coreograph and have him enter. As for me, beakdancing is asking a lot. Chance at a grand, though? Gotta give it a shot.

It's summer time, kids are out of school, and the cooler, industrious ones are up early practicing their swordplay so that one day when they are of age, they can protect their wife, child, property and honor against those that would lay claim or waste to the same.
At least, that's the scene I ran into this morning after taking Z to work.
So I'm on good terms with the neighborhood kids. Not name-knowing terms, but played soccer with once or twice. And helped catch their dog. Good enough terms to stop them immediately before they put each other's eye out. Kid A has this five pound CHUNK of wood, and Kid B has a pretty decent branch, except it's at a 90 DEGREE ANGLE.
I teach them to get better sticks; solid, straight, etc. Drill them on the more basic concepts of how to move their feet, balance, stance, etc. About the time I'm showing them to just strike lightly, and not to aim for anything too vital (like eyeballs!) their mother comes out and starts yelling at me for "making" her kids hit each other with sticks. I tried to explain my intentions of INCREASING their safety in a common childhood pasttime, but she wasn't having it.
I mean, I see her point, but I don't think I was exactly in the wrong. Killed my day.
Three more days of Real Estate school, then my exam is on Thursday. Time to study.

12:59 am - Samurai Fiction
The Making Of Featurette made sure to point out - frequently - that it was an MTV Japan project. Had I known that, I would've likely been unfair in my judging of the movie as I watched it, given that American MTV sucks so very badly.
I would have been wrong.
As a movie, it was solid. Not on par with the standard samurai essentials mind you, but very solid. Good. Nice story, I liked the characterization, funny at times... but perhaps the most interesting thing was the director's affinity for long shots. Nearly every shot was twice as long as you might have expected from another director, and it is that to which I attribute a lot of the coolness to some of the scenes.
The movie is scored by Tomoyasu Hotei, who most would know from Kill Bill. The scene with O-ren walking with her crazy kamen posse` is set to a song called "Battle Without Honor or Humility." That's his. One might also have heard this song on a car commercial. Regardless, the man is brilliant. Also, he played with David Bowie at some point in his career. Steve Vai and Joe Perry also. In addition to scoring the film, he was the main villain, and a very decent one at that; one Rannosuke Kazamatsuri. All in all a cool guy.
For anyone who has a soft spot for samurai movies, I'd recommend it. For anyone who could care less about samurai movies, but is curious to see duels fought to surf inspired guitar tracks, I reccomend it.
To those who like neither, get a clue. >BO

10:33 pm - Whisper of the Heart
Saw it for the first time just now. Not my favorite, and not the best Ghibli film, but I hold an enormous soft spot specifically for it now. It's probably one of the more human stories I've ever experienced, and no part of it left me wanting. I wholly encourage anyone who hasn't to see it.

11:28 pm - First post in true Geta style...
Anyone says anything bad about Grindhouse and I punch them in the teeth. Particularly Death Proof. Kurt Russell said my hair was "rockin'."
The old journal, now being defunct, is reduced for the span of 1 month to serving as a signpost to this one, then I send it to the internet graveyard. There wasn't much of value anyhow.
In other news, the first picture of the live action Mach 5 has been released!
